Hydraulic cylinder – Also known as the linear hydraulic motor, it does the job of giving unidirectional force via a unidirectional stroke. It is actually a mechanical Actuator. The hydraulic cylinder is made of mainly a cylinder base, cylinder head, cylinder barrel, piston rod, seal gland, piston and seals. The hydraulic cylinder has a piston connected with a piston rod and placed inside the cylinder barrel. This piston rod moves back and forth. The design is such that the base of the cylinder is closed up and the head of the cylinder is open and this is from where the piston rod goes out of the cylinder. There is this partition in the cylinder due to the piston rod dividing it into two distinct chambers, namely the head end and the cap end. The power to the hydraulic cylinders is obtained from pressurized fluid, mostly it is oil.
Types of Hydraulic Cylinders – There are mainly two types of hydraulic cylinders, the welded body cylinder and the rod cylinder. The rod cylinder makes used of threaded steel rods of high strength in order to hold the cylinder barrels to end caps. While in the case of welded body cylinder tie rods are not present. The ports are welded to the barrel and the barrel to the end caps directly. The front rod gland is either bolted or threaded into the cylinder barrel in order to facilitate the removal of it for servicing.

Hydraulic Ram – Deriving power from hydro-power, hydraulic ram or call it hydram is basically a cyclic water pump. The work of a hydraulic ram is to output water at a higher hydraulic head and a low flow rate after taking in water at a certain hydraulic head and flow rate. With the help of water hammer effect, the pressure developed allows the water that at input to be lifted to a higher point than the original point. The hydraulic ram is made up of two moving parts- the spring loaded waste valve and the delivery check valve. It also has two pipes namely the drive pipe which manages the water supply from an elevated source and a delivery pipe which carries some portion of the water coming through the drive pipe to a higher elevation than the original.
